Nottingham Forest’s Lyle Taylor issues message on Derby County’s situation which may surprise fans

Nottingham Forest forward Lyle Taylor has suggested that he would like to see Derby County defy the odds and survive in the Championship this season despite their off-field issues.

The Rams have endured a turbulent start to the Championship season off the field. They have now dropped down to the foot of the table after their 12 point deduction for entering into administration was confirmed.

Forest were unable to beat Derby, despite their off-the-field issues, when the two sides met last month in the first derby clash of the campaign with the Reds needing a late equaliser just to take a point.

There is the chance that Derby could be deducted further points as well in the near future. That would make an already difficult task for Wayne Rooney to try and keep the Rams in the Championship this season look almost impossible.

Won the European Cup back-to-back

Speaking to BBC’s Football Daily podcast, via Nottinghamshire Live, Taylor has suggested that for the sake of the fierce rivalry between Forest and Derby he would want to see the Rams produce an amazing story by surviving the drop this term.

While he also insisted that Derby could soon head in a new direction under new owners and that if he was able to guide the club to safety then Rooney would become an instant legend with the Rams.

He said: “Can you imagine the scenes if there is an East Midlands derby at Pride Park or the City Ground next year. Oh my god, it would be absolutely mental.

“The Derby fans would be going absolutely bonkers, the Forest fans would be going absolutely bonkers.

“For the sake of the sake of that rivalry, I hope Derby stay up because I think that would be an amazing story.

“Under new ownership, you never know where a club like that could go. They could flourish.

“Someone like Wayne Rooney would become a Derby legend in the space of eight months.”

The verdict

These might not be the sort of comments that you would expect to hear from a Nottingham Forest player towards their fierce rivals Derby. However, you can completely understand where Taylor is coming from here.

Despite the rivalry that Forest have with Derby there will be few connected with either club that would actually want one of the two clubs to go out of business.

That would see one of the best derby matches in English football be lost and the history of that fixture needs protecting.

Taylor is right that under new ownership, if they can find it, Derby could look a different animal and they were already showing plenty of fight on the field under Rooney this season prior to their points deduction.

However, it is difficult to see anyway in which Derby can survive the drop this season if they are handed another points deduction.
