It was a special Tuesday night for Ben Brereton, who made his international debut for Chile against Argentina.

Chile began their Copa America campaign with a 1-1 draw with Argentina last night, with Lionel Messi opening the scoring on 33 minutes.

Eduardo Vargas found an equaliser for Chile on 57 minutes, though, and on 77 minutes, Brereton entered the fray.

Brereton had a few nice touches, but the game finished 1-1 after making a late substitute cameo and playing against the legendary Messi.

Joao Carvalho is the club's record signing.

A number of Blackburn and Nottingham Forest players have since reacted to Brereton’s debut, with Joe Lolley poking fun at the player’s shirt.

On the back of Brereton’s strip, the words ‘Brereton Diaz’ were present. He qualifies for Chile through his mother and is even sporting a new name on international duty.

Lolley was quick to poke fun at Brereton Diaz’s name on Instagram.

The Verdict

Brereton would never have dreamt of playing against Messi whilst on international duty, but it will have been an excellent experience for him to represent Chile.

He was seen as a really promising young talent when he burst onto the scene at Forest and scored on his home debut against Aston Villa.

Things haven’t completely worked out for him since moving to Blackburn and he has failed to hit the heights expected of him, but maybe his international debut will kickstart things for him.
