Watford’s Philip Zinckernagel has agreed to join Greek outfit Olympiacos.

The club has confirmed the arrival of the playmaker on a three-year contract, keeping him with the side until 2025.

The midfielder spent the previous campaign out on loan at Nottingham Forest, where he featured 42 times for the Reds as they secured promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Zinckernagel also helped Watford earn promotion to the top flight 12 months prior, playing 20 times as the team came 2nd in the Championship.

However, his time at Vicarage Road has now come to an end following an agreement that sees him join Olympiacos.

The Dane originally signed for the Hornets in 2020 from Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt, where he won the 2020 league title, scoring 19 and assisting 18 in their championship winning campaign.

The 27-year old performed well for Forest last season, scoring six and assisting seven goals as the team finished 4th in the table.

It was previously reported that Steve Cooper was interested in keeping Zinckernagel at the City Ground beyond his loan stint, but his permanent exit from Watford has now been sealed with a move abroad.

The Verdict

It is surprising that the playmaker was let leave Watford so easily considering how well he performed for Forest last season.

But he was obviously not seen as part of the club’s plans moving forward so an exit is likely the best option for him at this stage of his career.

Given the ties between Forest and Olympiacos, it would come as no surprise to see Zinckernagel back with the Reds at some point in the future.

But the Greek side are getting a solid, consistent goal creation outlet to their side and he could prove to be quite a great addition to the team.
