Reading defender Tom Holmes has caught the eye of Nottingham Forest, according to the Nottingham Post.

With Cyrus Christie returning to parent club Fulham this summer following the end of his loan, the Reds need to strengthen at right-back ahead of the new campaign.

Holmes is a centre-back by trade but was regularly used as a right-back by the Royals last season and did not look out of place at all.

He certainly seems to have impressed those at the City Ground as the Nottingham Post has reported that the versatile defender has caught the eye of the East Midlands club, who are interested in him.

The 21-year-old has entered the final year of his contract and is yet to sign new terms, despite Reading reportedly offering a new three-year deal.

Holmes made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Royals last season, the majority of which came on the right side of defence, and added two assists.

Should the two clubs agree a deal, he would become just Forest's second signing of the summer – in what has been an uncharacteristically quiet window for the club.

Holmes is the second Reading player to be linked with the Reds this summer following reports that Josh Laurent is a target.

The Verdict

There's no denying that Forest need reinforcements at right-back and that Holmes was impressive at the position for Reading last term but you'd understand if supporters felt this was a conservative move.

The 21-year-old is likely to struggle to provide the attacking output down the right flank that many would like to see at the City Ground – having made just five accurate crosses, only 13 successful dribbles, and provided just eight shot assists last term (Wyscout).

That said, given his contract situation the Reds may be able to sign a talented young player that has proven his quality in the Championship for a cut-price fee.

It's a move that could well split opinions among Forest supporters but one thing is for sure, more full-backs are needed.
