Roy Keane is set to be appointed as Martin O'Neill's number two, reuniting the pair after they lost their jobs with the Republic of Ireland, report the Guardian

Keane has apparently had the offer on the table since O'Neill was appointed as Aitor Karanka's successor but has only now agreed to join him at the City Ground.

The report by the Guardian states that the delay was down to the former Manchester United midfielder considering whether to take up another assistant's job or wait for an opportunity to become a manager himself.

But he is now set to join up with his long-term partner again just after he picked up his first win as Forest boss.

The Reds saw off Wigan Athletic 3-1 at the City Ground on Saturday thanks to goals from Joe Lolley, Matty Cash and Adlene Guedioura.

Josh Windass scored the Latics' only goal of the game but failed to make the scoreline tighter late on as Costel Pantillimon saved his tame penalty.

Keane's first match as an assistant is likely to come this weekend when they travel to St Andrew's to face fellow play-off hopefuls Birmingham City.

The verdict

This makes sense.

I was not a big fan of the O'Neill appointment but if he is going to come in you should want him to have his most trusted staff around him and Keane is clearly one of those.

It will be very interesting to see what happens at Forest between now and the end of the season.
