This season is one that Nottingham Forest fans will surely want to forget as soon as humanly possible having fallen well short of their preseason targets.

Back in the summer of 2018, the incoming Forest board were determined to carry out a squad revolution, with the ultimate ambition of recreating the success that Wolves had in the previous campaign.

Over 20 new faces arrived at the City Ground, but the part that echoed the most recent champions most was the arrival of two exciting Portuguese attackers.

Joao Carvalho arrived permanently from Benfica for a club record £13million and brought with him Diogo Goncalves, who initially joined on a loan but with the option of a permanent deal.

Hopes were high that the winger would shine and be the man to help fire Forest back into the top-flight after a lengthy absence.

Flair, pace, goals and assists were expected from the boots of the 22-year-old but as the final whistle blew on the season, he had made just seven Championship assists, contributing to no goals in that time.

A red card in the club's 3-2 win against Stoke City in the League Cup was his most notable contribution so it was not the finest season on record.

The club still had a decision to make at the end of the season, however. Would they move to sign the winger permanently?

The answer was a resounding no, according to the Nottingham Post, and it points the way to an encouraging change of attitude at the City Ground ahead of what will be a crucial summer.

It would have been a reckless move for the Reds to sign him permanently, but this season has shown that they are not shy to a foolish transfer decision.

The likes of Claudio Yacob, Michael Dawson, Gil Dias, Karim Ansarifard and Panagiotis Tachtsidis all arrived but contributed very little.

But lessons have clearly been learnt.

The last thing that Forest need to be do this summer is carry out another sizeable reshuffle of players as it will only serve to interrupt any momentum they had built.

And the Goncalves decision points to a sensible summer, which will ultimately give them a much better chance of competing next season.
