Nottingham Forest have seen their takeover attempt by an American consortium collapse at the final hour, their official website has confirmed.

Owner Fawaz Al Hasawi released the statement on the official site to confirm that the takeover led by former San Diego Padres owner John Jay Moores.

The news will come as a bitter blow to Forest fans, who have seen their club sell top stars this season like Ollie Burke, while they also look set to sell captain Henri Lansbury to Aston Villa.

Under French manager Philippe Montanier the club have failed to sustain any sort of for this season, and find themselves firmly in a relegation battle in the Championship with just less than half a season to go.

Fawaz said he had 'acted in the best interests of the club' and that negotiations had now 'come to an end'.

The two time European Cup winners were hoping for a fresh start after what has on the whole been a torrid regime under Fawaz. Many fans were hoping Gary Rowett would be the man to come in and replace Montanier, but with the deal for the club to be taken over, this is once again up in the air.
