Nottingham Forest youngster Ryan Yates could be set to leave the club this January, with Portsmouth willing to pay £500,000 for his services according to the Daily Mirror (live blog, 06/12 3.10pm)

The exciting midfielder spent time on loan in League One with Scunthorpe last season, following an impressive six months at Notts County. He helped the Magpies to a top three place in League Two, only for their season to collapse when he left.

His stint with the Iron brought the same, they finished in the League One play off places but Yates was on the losing side in the semi finals. He remained at Forest to fight for his place this summer, but hasn't featured in the Championship under Karanka.

Kenny Jackett is now reportedly ready to pay the £500,000 transfer fee needed to secure his services on a permanent basis to help his side finish off their own promotion charge.

They're currently top of League One and hoping for a return to the Championship after a few seasons in the doldrums, with Jackett believing that Yates is a key component in furthering their hold on the title race.

The Verdict

This could be a huge move for Pompey. Yates has proven himself to be an excellent prospect and has impressed wherever he's managed to get a game.

It's a crying shame for Forest fans that the Lincoln-born youngster is not able to force himself into their side, but their loss will be Portsmouth's gain.

That said, if a price is named there are sure to be other suitors too. Rotherham had shown an interest and could potentially afford the fee.
