Nottingham Forest should consider snapping up 26-year-old free transfer ahead of new season

Barnsley forward Marley Watkins announced his intentions to move to pastures new in a statement this morning and this has naturally alerted several Sky Bet Championship clubs towards his availability.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an exceptional first season in the second tier netting 10 goals and claiming nine assists as the Tykes became one of the surprise packages of the 2016/17 campaign.

One club who should be moving quickly to secure a superb piece of summer business is Nottingham Forest, who will undoubtedly be looking to bolster their squad ahead of next season after narrowly avoiding relegation this time around.

One attribute that Forest fans are sticklers for is work rate and Watkins offers that in abundance which would ensure he becomes a firm favourite with the City Ground faithful.

Watkins built up quite a rapport with supporters of Barnsley, with many of the club’s ardent fans saddened with the player’s decision to reject the offer of an improved deal to stay in South Yorkshire.

Forest boss Mark Warburton has spoke of his desire to work with a smaller squad during the 2017/18 season and Championship expertise will naturally be a criteria for any new signings that come into the club during the summer.

The Reds are unlikely to have a massive transfer budget to spend on new players during the summer months and the chance to sign a proven second tier performer on a free might not be an opportunity that the club can afford to turn down.

Another factor that Forest should consider is the formation that Warburton is wanting to utilise and with Watkins comfortable on either flank, or in attack, it would ensure an effortless transition into the team.

Nottingham Forest supporters, would you welcome Watkins to the club? Who else would you like to see signed in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!!!
