Mark Warburton arrived at Nottingham Forest this morning with his immediate remit a very clear one; to guide the Reds away from the Championship relegation zone.

Forest have slipped alarmingly close to the bottom three of late and entertain Derby County at the weekend just two points clear of the club in 22nd place in the division.

One thing that the ex-Brentford boss will be looking to identify over the next nine games is which of the current first-team squad will feature in his plans for next season, and subsequently who will be offloaded during the close season.

Certainly one problematic thing that needs addressing in the summer is the Reds’ defence, with only Rotherham United having conceded more goals than Forest so far this season.

Ipswich Town defender and former Forest man Luke Chambers comes to the end of his contract this summer and the Reds would be wise to pursue his signature.

The Reds have struggled to get a consistent back four out on the pitch this season and one area in which Chambers does excel is the reliability department.

Michael Mancienne and Jack Hobbs are both out of contract at the City Ground during the summer, whilst Matt Mills has had injury problems of his own this season.

Chambers returning to the City Ground on a free transfer would be sensible, if unspectacular, business by the club and his dedication and work rate would be admirable traits for Forest next season.

The tough tackling central defender adhered himself to those of a Forest persuasion during a previous spell at the club, playing 205 times for the Reds during a five-year spell and built up a strong partnership with Wes Morgan.

The current Forest squad lacks a real leader and Chambers could fill that void with aplomb.
