Nottingham Forest set to suffer transfer blow as reported target agrees deal with another club

Stade Rennais forward M’Baye Niang has agreed a deal with Italian side Venezia over a switch back to Serie A this summer amid interest from Nottingham Forest, according to Sky Italy, via the Daily Record.

It was reported that Nottingham Forest were in the race to secure the signing of Niang this summer as the Reds search to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

That comes with the forward having been loaned out by Stade Rennais last term after falling out of favour in their starting line-up.

It was believed that Nottingham Forest were being rivalled by the likes of Celtic, Anderlecht and Venezia for the signature of Niang this summer. That suggested that it was always going to be difficult for them to make a move happen for the former Watford and AC Milan attacker.

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon also suggested that Niang’s wage demands could well dampen any chance that Nottingham Forest could have of securing a move for the attacker this summer.

Has Matej Vydra ever scored a goal against Nottingham Forest?

According to Sky Italy, via the Daily Record, Niang is now closing in on a switch back to Serie A this summer with him having thought to have agreed a deal with Venezia that should see him finally depart Stade Rennais.

The verdict

Whilst this is a blow for Nottingham Forest and their hopes of adding to their forward options during the summer transfer window, it is not one that would not have been expected you would imagine.

It was always going to be a major ask for Niang to drop down to the second tier of any European league with him used to operating in the top-flights of English, French and Italian football.

Niang could have been an excellent signing for the Reds with him being a player that could have added a lot of experience and a real powerful presence in the attacking third for them in the Championship.

He would also have already had experience in English football from his spell at Watford so settling him in might have been easier for the Reds.

However, it is probably best from a financial perspective that Niang has agreed to move to another club this summer. Forest were always unlikely to be able to match the sort of wages that a top-flight side could have offered. It means now that Chris Hughton’s side can now move onto other potential targets now.
