Bristol Rovers defender Tom Lockyer is a transfer target for Nottingham Forest, according to The Nottingham Post.

Lockyer is seen as an alternative target to Sam Byram, should Nottingham Forest fail to land the 24-year-old on loan from West Ham United.

The Hammers are currently stalling on sending Byram out on loan to the Championship as they weigh up their options in defence.

Although Nottingham Forest remain confident of landing the former Leeds United man, Lockyer is a back-up option.

The 23-year-old is the current captain of Bristol Rovers and has played well over 200 senior games for them already in his short career.

The 4-cap Wales international is rated very highly and he can operate at right-back or as a centre-half.

Nottingham Forest are now considering a swoop for the former Cardiff City youngster to bolster their defence.

The Verdict

Lockyer would be a very impressive signing which would complete their summer business nicely.

Position by position, Karanka has improved his squad where it needs to be improved and the last remaining problem is depth at full-back.

Lockyer has the perfect blend of youth and experience, he is a leader at the back and he is versatile so this is a shrewd long-term plan for the Reds.
