Since his return from injury, Ryan Yates has been one of the standout players for Nottingham Forest over the past few matches.

It's been a frustrating few months for the 21-year-old. He was finally able to establish himself as an important first-team player for Forest last season, making 15 Championship starts for the Reds in the second half of the campaign under Martin O'Neill.

After Sabri Lamouchi replaced O'Neill in charge at the City Ground this summer, Yates would have been determined to impress the Frenchman, but things didn't work out like that.

The midfielder suffered a major setback just a few days into pre-season training, when a long-standing knee problem flared up again.

After undergoing surgery, Yates was forced to spend the next few weeks on the sidelines, missing the Reds' promising start to the campaign, but he made his return to the side recently and has impressed hugely.

Yates made his first appearance of the season for Forest when he came off the bench in the second half of the 2-1 defeat to Hull City last month. Even though he couldn't inspire Forest to victory, he was still able to make an impact.

His performance was enough to earn him a place in the starting line-up for the clash with Luton Town and he impressed again, providing the Reds with some real intensity and tenacity in the middle of the park as they won 2-1 at Kenilworth Road.

Yates started again against Derby County at the weekend and did well - he's certainly given Lamouchi plenty to think about going into the international break.

However, with Samba Sow and Alfa Semedo both expected to return after the two-week break, it could be difficult for Yates to keep his place in team.

Sow and Semedo have been two of the standout players for Forest in the Championship this season, so there's every chance that Lamouchi could decide to put them straight back into the team after the international break.

This would probably mean Yates dropping back down to the bench, but the Englishman has just got to make sure that he continues to work hard and keeps on impressing in training.

He's got a lot of potential and he's shown in just a couple of league starts for Forest that he could have a major role to play in their promotion push. He's just got to keep going and keep believing in himself.

When he does get opportunities in the team, he has to take them and make sure that he shows Lamouchi why he deserves to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens after the international break and whether Lamouchi decides to stick with Yates or not.
