Nottingham Forest defender Jordan Gabriel is set to join League One side Blackpool on loan, according to Alan Nixon.

Gabriel spent the second half of last season away from the City Ground, joining League Two side Scunthorpe United on loan and making nine appearances for the Iron.

The departure of Matty Cash to Aston Villa in pre-season saw Gabriel start in the Carabao Cup defeat to Barnsley, as well as the opening day league defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Cyrus Christie has since arrived at Forest from Fulham, though, which could potentially hinder Gabriel's first-team chances at the City Ground this term.

Now, according to Nixon, Gabriel is set to move on loan to League One side Blackpool, right after signing a new deal on Trentside.

Gabriel did put pen to paper on a new deal at the City Ground last season, keeping him at the club until 2022, but a new contract now seems to be in the offing, as per Nixon.

The Verdict

This is the right move for both parties.

Gabriel was impressive against Barnsley and QPR, particularly against the former, but he still needs to improve if he wants to become Forest's first-choice right-back.

Christie is bound to be their first-choice right-back this season, and it would be unfair for 22-year-old Gabriel to sit on the bench week in, week out.

Regular game-time is what is important.
