Oxford United have completed the permanent signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Marcus McGuane.
The former Arsenal youngster joined Forest from FC Barcelona in February 2020, but failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Reds.
In the summer, he was sent on loan to League One side Oxford United, making 20 appearances in all competitions for the promotion-chasing U’s.
McGuane registered four assists in League One before a thigh injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season in January.
But Oxford have now confirmed the permanent signing of McGuane, who has penned a three-year deal at the Kassam Stadium, joining for an undisclosed fee.
McGuane leaves the City Ground having failed to make a first-team appearance for the Reds, having played most of last season in the Under-23s’.
Chris Hughton will look to reshape his squad this summer, with McGuane seemingly not a part of the manager’s plans going forward.
This is a bit of a strange one for me.
Brennan Johnson, Tyrese Fornah and Jordan Gabriel have all impressed in League One this season, and are all likely to be a part of Hughton’s squad next season.
But McGuane, who has also impressed in League One, has never really been given a chance by Forest, and it’s now clear that he isn’t a part of their thinking going forward.
They must have their reasons, but it does seem quite strange that the club have been so quick to cash in before the summer transfer window has even began.
