Sunderland are eyeing up a double swoop for Nottingham Forest's Liam Bridcutt and Zach Clough.

The Sunderland Echo have reported that the duo are available for loan moves this January window, and that the Black Cats are showing an interest in a potential move for the pair.

The Black Cats moved into the League One play-off places at the weekend, and manager Phil Parkinson is keen to strengthen this window as his side look to maintain their position in the top six.

It is reported that a striker and a central midfielder are on the 52-year-old's list this January and with both Bridcutt and Clough seemingly out of favour at Forest, the Black Cats are expected to make a move in the coming days.

Bridcutt spent the first half of this season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, but after returning to the City Ground at the start of the month is available for loan once again.

The 30-year-old spent two seasons on Wearside between 2014-2016, making 24 appearances for the club before leaving for Leeds United.

Clough, who worked with Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers, is reportedly admired by the current Black Cats boss for his 'work-rate and ability in the final third'.

The Verdict

This double swoop seems to make sense in every aspect given both players are out of favour at Forest, and that Sunderland should be able to lure them to Wearside.

Both signings would certainly bolster Parkinson's squad and Liam Bridcutt would add experience to the Black Cats' midfield.

It is sometimes easy to forget that Clough is still only 24 as it feels he has around for a while now but he would also represent an experienced signing for the Black Cats.

The 24-year-old scored 23 goals in 77 appearances for Bolton and would certainly add some firepower and pace to Sunderland's front line.

Both deals would represent Sunderland's intent of securing at least a play-off spot and challenging for League One's top two.
