Nottingham Forest negotiations reportedly underway for New York City FC forward

Nottingham Forest have opened talks over Argentinian striker Valentin Castellanos, as per reports.

According to TNT Sports, via NottinghamshireLive, the forward is valued in the region of £10 million pounds and the Reds have opened negotiations with the City group, owners of New York City FC, over a move for the 23-year-old.

Valentin Castellanos began his career in Chile having come through the youth system at Universidad de Chile, eventually making his one and only appearance for the club in the Copa Sudamericana in 2017.

Castellanos would leave for Uruguayan side Montevideo City Torque that same year, eventually going on to play 30 times for the club, scoring five goals.

It is at New York City FC that the player has really caught the eye, though, after he first joined the US side in July 2018, initially on loan.

Castellanos made just 10 MLS appearances during his first season in the big apple, but in his second season excelled, scoring 11 goals and registering eight assists in 30 MLS outings.

Last season in the US league, Castellanos scored 19 and assisted eight for NYCFC, scoring a further seven goals in the MLS play-offs and the CONCACAF Champions League.

With the 2022 MLS season already underway, the 23-year-old has already netted seven times in 11 appearances this season.

The Verdict

This is a fascinating signing if it happens.

Castellanos is producing impressive numbers in the MLS and CONCACAF Champions League, but there is a big difference between the levels of the American league and the Premier League.

That being said, it could be a gamble worth taking for Forest as they look to strengthen their squad following their Championship promotion.

They have been linked with a number of strikers so far this summer which suggest they are in the market for a forward, and if Castellanos can translate his numbers in the US over to Premier League football, Forest will have a hell of a player on their hands.

It will be interesting to see if this one develops any further.
