Mark Warburton has done a lot of good work at Nottingham Forest so far this season.
The former Rangers manager has put together a side capable of causing teams problems and has restored the fans’ pride in a side that had become soulless under countless managers in the past.
However, Forest’s defensive record has to be a cause for concern for Warburton – his side have conceded 19 goals this season, which is just three less than Bolton, who are rooted to the bottom of the table without a win.
19 is also the same number as Birmingham, who have already lost patience with Harry Redknapp.
Obviously there is no imminent chance that Warburton will suffer the same fate but if his promising side is to achieve anything of note this season, they are going to need to tighten up at the back.
They have only kept three league clean sheets this season and although they have assembled the aforementioned potent attack, needing to score twice to win in the second tier is unlikely to be a winning formula as the season draws on.
Despite experimentation between three and four man backlines this season, Warburton is yet to find that critical balance and that is something that will need to change if Forest are to make a serious bid for the top six this season.
However, it should not be forgotten that Warburton is leading the club from a turbulent period and a season in mid-table with goals going in at both ends still represents a vast improvement on last season’s relegation escape act on the final day of the season.
