Nottingham Forest must do this to beat Derby

Published

on

Nottingham Forest only have two away wins from five attempts so far this season and the results could not be more contrasting.

Their first away match of the season produced a dramatic 4-3 win away at Brentford, while their only other away win came exactly a month later with late 1-0 victory at Sunderland.

When looking at how best to go about securing a third away triumph of the season, as well as securing bragging rights over bitter rivals Derby County, the choice Mark Warburton faces is stark.

However, it seems clear that the Sunderland blueprint, a clean sheet and a slightly less adventurous starting line up is the way for the former Rangers boss to go, even if it goes against much of what he’s done so far this season.

Forest have improved greatly as an attacking threat and although Derby’s attack isn’t exactly lethal, they have experienced players who may exploit any tactical naivety from Forest and counter attackers such as Andi Weimann to be feared.

Instead, Warburton should err on the side of caution, with a local flavour in the shape of Ben Osborn and Ben Berreton instead of going hell for leather from the off.

A four-man defence should be enough to shackle Derby’s lone striker system and if Forest can keep a rare clean sheet, Warburton should fancy whichever combination of his lively attackers take the pitch to grab at least one goal.

The onus will be on Derby to break down the door, something they have struggled to do this season, and playing a patient game should pay dividends for Warburton.
