Leeds United face a fight to sign Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow when the January transfer window opens, with Nottingham Forest registering their interest in signing him, according to the Football Insider.

Leeds were reportedly in pole position to sign Darlow, after Jamal Blackman was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a fractured leg.

Darlow has fallen out of favour at St James' Park this season with the emergence of Martin Dubravka seeing Darlow not having a single minute of game time this season in the Premier League.

The shot-stopper was impressive for the Magpies previously, but his game time this season is limited, so he is sure to be eyeing an exit away from the club in January.

Nottingham Forest's interest in his services could come as a blow to Leeds, as Darlow could be tempted to return to the City Ground.

He spent eight years at the Reds before moving to Newcastle in 2014, and could be the answer to Nottingham Forest's current goalkeeping issues this season.

Costel Pantilimon has struggled recently to perform consistently, and Darlow could be the perfect competition that he needs to perform to a high standard.

It's set up to be an almighty tussle between the two Championship heavyweights to secure his signature, and he could be the missing piece in the jigsaw for both sides as they battle for promotion back to the Premier League.

The Verdict

He is certainly a man in demand in January.

Darlow could be the difference between promotion and staying in the Championship to either team this season, so both Forest and Leeds will have to do everything they can to sign him.

I think a move to Leeds would suit him better as he would have a greater chance at gaining promotion, but he would be guaranteed more regular football with a return to Nottingham Forest, so he certainly needs to think carefully about his next move.
