Nottingham Forest winger Joe Lolley has had his say on teammate Ben Osborn's fortuitous goal in the Reds' League Cup win against Stoke City on Wednesday night.

Aitor Karanka's side were 3-2 winners with Osborn opening the scoring after racing through one-on-one only for his shot to deflect in off his knee after Adam Federici's save.

Taking to Twitter the following morning, Lolley said: "Great to see @OsbornOn1 on the scoresheet, those extra hours after training finishing with his knees has finally paid off."

It was the midfielder's first goal of the season and helped secure Forest's place in the fourth round of the competition, surviving a late comeback from the visitors.

Goals from Daryl Murphy and Lolley himself put the home side 3-0  before the hour mark with the match threatening to get away from Gary Rowett's team.

But goals from Benik Afobe on the hour mark and then by Saido Berahino on the 83rd. Berahino missed a golden chance to level the scores late on but somehow headed completely wide from a free header.

The verdict

It is good to see some character from a squad that has often looked under immense pressure this season.

Forest appear to be on an upturn in form as their summer signings slowly start to click and Karanka finally finds his best side.

It will be interesting to see how much they can improve week in week out from now on.
