Harry Arter has heaped praise on teammate Ryan Yates, claiming that Nottingham Forest ‘need’ players with his mentality in the team.
The 22-year-old has been a divisive figure at the City Ground over the years, with the support often critical of the midfielder when he plays.
However, he has been a constant presence in the XI, with Martin O’Neill, Sabri Lamouchi and Chris Hughton all clearly valuing what the academy graduate offers.
And, speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Arter revealed that his efforts are certainly appreciated in the dressing room as well, as he explained why Yates is such an important player for the team.
“I think the thing with getting stick is, you’ve got to try to ignore it. I’m sure Ryan is probably aware of it – every player is always aware of it.
“I can see he’s someone who loves the club. It’s been great when I have played alongside Ryan. He’s not selfish, he doesn’t think of himself – he’s a team player. We need players with Ryan’s mentality in the team. The manager seems to like him and I’m sure he’ll change the fans’ minds.”
The Yates debate among Forest fans has been ongoing for some time, and it surely will have hurt the player.
However, Arter’s comments show that the team understand the role he has and the fact he constantly gets picked by different managers speaks volumes.
In fairness, some fans have acknowledged he has played well this season. But, criticism is part and parcel of football, all Yates can do is what Hughton asks of him and ensure he gives his all every time he pulls on the shirt.
