Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner could be set to re-join Nottingham Forest for a second loan spell, a club insider from Forest has informed Football League World.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at the City Ground last season where he played 18 times and scored four goals.

The central midfielder became an instant hit with the Forest faithful after a series of lung-busting performances and well taken long range goals.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood had been keen to take a look at the player ahead of the 2015/16 campaign but an injury suffered in a pre-season friendly with Walsall has now somewhat curtailed his progress.

It is now thought that after Sherwood landed his primary summer targets, Gardner could be allowed another temporary spell away from Villa Park, with Forest the most likely club to pounce.

If Forest boss Dougie Freedman can secure the services of the midfielder it would offer the Reds faithful real cause for optimism ahead of the new season.

Forest fans… Would Gardner push Forest on towards the Premier League? Which of his four goals last season was his best? Would the signing of Gardner signal the end of Robert Tesche? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below
