A host of Championship clubs have been placed on alert after Peterborough United manager Steve Evans and chairman Darragh MacAnthony both revealed that Jack Marriott could be heading for the exit door this summer, according to Peterborough Today.

Marriott is being chased by a number of Championship clubs after continuing to impress for Posh this season.

The 23-year-old hit his 33rd goal of the season this weekend, including 27 in the league, as his stock continues to rise.

And speaking after the game, manager Steve Evans conceded that it is unlikely Posh fans will be seeing Marriott at the club next term.

Evans said: “I’d be foolish not to want Jack Marriott in my team next season. But there is huge interest in a special talent and I trust the board to do what’s in the best interests of the club and of the player.

“The chairman turned down unacceptable bids for Jack in January and if those same bids come in for him now they will still be unacceptable.

“But I have spoken to some managers and they are determined to get Jack. It’s not a certainty he will go, but goalscorers as good as him are gold dust. There is a huge amount of interest in him."

This was echoed by Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony, who also admitted that the former Luton Town man could be on his way out of the ABAX.

MacAnthony said: “Jack is the best goal scorer in the Football League at 23-years-old. Reality tells us all whats going to happen next.”

These comments are likely to spark the interest of a number of Championship clubs with second tier trio Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday among the interested parties.

The Verdict

Marriott is only 23 and he is prolific at League One level. The next logical step in his career is to move to the Championship and given his age and goal scoring prowess, he is surely likely to be an excellent addition for whoever gets him. Nearly every club in the Championship will want to sign Marriott this summer and Peterborough will have to let him go now that they have failed to reach the play-offs.
