Nottingham Forest are ready to offer Burnley midfielder Dean Marney a contract for next season, according to a reliable football journalist.

Alan Nixon is reporting on Twitter that Nottingham Forest will swoop for Marney, who is set to become a free agent when his Burnley deal expires at the end of the current campaign.

The 34-year-old has been with Burnley for eight years after joining the Clarets in 2010.

Marney has played well over 200 games for Burnley in his eight year spell at Turf Moor and he has experience of playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City prior to that.

He has a total of 96 Premier League games under his belt, scoring four goals and adding a further ten assists.

But now the veteran midfielder could be set to depart Burnley with his contract expiring in the summer.

Nottingham Forest are ready to offer him a deal as they look to add experience to their ranks.

Marney has won two promotions from the Championship in his career, helping to guide Hull to play-off glory in 2008 before winning promotion with Burnley at the end of the 2015/16 season.

This season, the former England under-21 midfielder has not played a single goal as he has spent time out on the sidelines.

The Verdict

Snapping up Marney would certainly add experience to their young midfield ranks. But it would be a risk, considering his age and the fact that he has not played for the entirety of this campaign. It may be worth a gamble, though, on a free transfer.
