Nottingham Forest have recently announced that Jordan Smith has signed a contract extension with the club ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The Reds goalkeeper has been with Forest since he was seven-years-old, having come through the club's academy system. He has since gone on to make 51 appearances in total for the club.

But Smith has struggled for regular game time in recent seasons, which won't come as a surprise, especially when Brice Samba has been hugely impressive in recent months.

In an interview with the club's official website, Smith revealed that Sabri Lamouchi played a significant role in his decision to commit his future to the club.

"Sabri has been a huge reason why I am delighted to sign this new contact. He is very open and honest and you know what you are going to get.

"He made it clear that he wanted me to be part of this process, wherever it may lead and when a manager does that it is very difficult to turn away from."

It has previously been reported that Costel Pantilimon could be heading for a permanent exit from Nottingham Forest, which means it's likely that Smith will remain as the club's second-choice goalkeeper ahead of the new league campaign.

Forest will be targeting promotion this term, after their 2019/20 season reached a frustrating conclusion under the management of Sabri Lamouchi.

The Reds were on course to finish in the top-six, but a shock defeat to Stoke City at the City Ground saw them be beaten by Swansea City to sixth-spot on the final day of the Championship season.

Lamouchi's side will be looking to get their 2020/21 league campaign off to a winning start when they take on QPR in their first match of the season.

The Verdict:

You can understand their thinking behind this one.

Smith is highly unlikely to be getting into the Forest starting XI anytime soon, especially when Brice Samba hasn't done much wrong between the posts since signing for the club.

But Forest will need depth in their squad in case Samba gets injured, and Smith will be more than ready to step up to the mark when needed.

He's clearly keen to stick around with the club, having come through the club's academy system.
