Nottingham Forest have been mentioned as a possible destination for Salernitana’s former director of football Walter Sabatini.

According to Tutto Mercato’s Marco Conterio, Forest are exploring the option of bringing the 67-year old to the club this summer.

The Italian’s time at Salernitana was hugely successful, arriving at the club in January of this year with the side at the bottom of the Serie A table.

But a remarkable turnaround in the second half of the campaign saw the squad achieve an unlikely escape from relegation.

Sabatini has been credited as having played a crucial role in the team’s up-turn in form, with his recruitment boosting the club’s chances of survival.

However, a disagreement over the future direction of the club with the current President Danilo Iervolino has seen the chain-smoking wheeler dealer depart Salernitana going into the summer transfer window.

That has seen Forest and Olympiacos both linked with a possible appointment of the famous figure of Italian football.

It is unclear exactly what role he would take up if appointed, but he would bring plenty of experience to the recruitment side as Steve Cooper’s team prepare for life in the Premier League.

The Verdict

This appointment appears unlikely, with Forest assumedly happy with their recent work in the transfer window.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it should be the mentality at the City Ground and their latest transfer dealings have really helped elevate the squad into the top flight.

While Sabatini did well at Salernitana, it is a whole other ball game to work on improving a side going from the Championship to the Premier League.

Maybe in previous years this appointment would have made more sense, but it appears unlikely as things stand.
