Nottingham Forest are eyeing a move for Bristol Rovers highly-rated right back Tom Lockyer, according to the Nottingham Post.

The 23-year old, capped four times for Wales, is thought to be part of Aitor Karanka's plans to strengthen across the back, with Tendayi Darikwa currently the only right-sided full back in the squad.

Lockyer emerged from the Cardiff City youth set up, joining at the age of 11 but finding himself released at 16. He signed scholarship forms with the Gas in 2011 and has since gone on to establish himself as a firm favourite in the blue half of Bristol.

He's played 238 times in all competitions despite his tender age and was called up to represent Wales for the first time in 2017. He already had seven U21 appearances to his name, but he made his full international debut against Panama in a 1-1 draw.

He's since played three more times as he establishes himself in the international set up, as well as becoming Rovers club captain.

Paul Taylor's report suggests that Lockyer is a 'back-up', should they fail to land Sam Byram from West Ham United.

The Verdict

Whilst Byram might be their number one target, a swoop for Lockyer makes far more sense. He would be cost effective, not perhaps a consideration in the big-spending summer at the City Ground, but certainly something to consider as the transfer fees rack up.

For a 23-year old to captain his club side and play for his country, he must have plenty about him. Byram might be a Premier League player, but Lockyer could well be a surprise package, especially with his extensive experience at such a young age.
