Young Nottingham Forest defender Anel Ahmedhozic is reportedly set to leave the City Ground to return to his former club Malmo, report the Nottingham Post

The 19-year-old moved to the Reds' academy in January 2016 and made his debut that season in a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United but is yet to appear since, settling for a few stints on the first-team bench.

Ahmedhozic had returned to the Swedish giants back in the summer to train with Uwe Rosler's side but decided to try his luck back with Forest after Aitor Karanka's appointment.

He was an unused substitute in the Spaniard's final match with the club, a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.

New boss Martin O'Neill picked up his first win as Forest boss on Saturday, seeing off Wigan Athletic comfortably at the City Ground.

Goals from Joe Lolley, Matty Cash and Adlene Guedioura either side of a Josh Windass equaliser was enough for a 3-1 win with Windass also missing a late penalty for the visitors.

It is a win that takes them to within four points of the play-off places although sixth-placed Derby County have a game in hand.

The verdict

It is always a shame to see a promising young player leave your club but this is probably for the best.

It is unlikely that O'Neill would be utilising the defender in the closing months of the season and at 19 he will want to be playing more first-team football.

There is clearly more chance of that happening at Malmo so it is right that Forest let him go.
