Teenager Ben Brereton scored the third as Nottingham Forest stunned Arsenal in the FA Cup Third Road, eliminating the holders and beating them 4-2.

Brereton said that belief and approaching the game with no fear was the key to causing an upset and inflicting Arsene Wenger's first defeat in the third round of the competition in his entire time in England.

Eric Lichaj's double - including a superb volley into the top left hand corner of Colombian international David Ospina's net, Kieran Dowell's penalty and Brereton's spot kick put Gary Brazil's Forest into the fourth round and staked the caretaker manager's claim to get the top job at the City Ground on a full-time basis.

He has also said that putting in such a good performance against players such as Per Mertesacker, who has won the World Cup, has filled him with confidence that he can do it against the very best.

He said to the official club website: "It feels great, everyone is buzzing. We went into the game with no fear and it showed. We just wanted to do our best and it showed. We all believed, it is just about going out there and doing it. We all wanted to do our best and we have come out and showed that we wanted it.

"People have said in the past that we go down when we concede a goal but today we all showed that if we do concede, we can keep going. We showed that today and I can only praise every single one of the lads.

"Gary said to me to stop coming to feet and to go in behind instead and that is what I did. It was exploiting their weakness and it worked.

"Once I knew I could do it, I kept doing it. It built confidence for the team and the lads stuck together today. Everyone is getting closer and closer so there is a good atmosphere. It has given me a lot of confidence."

The Verdict

Brereton is a frightening prospect and at just 18, he is going to get better and better. He has proved to outsiders and himself that he can do it against Premier League opposition.

That might just attract attention from potential suitors in the January transfer window, but Forest will hope to hang on to the frontman for as long as possible.
