Nottingham Forest could still bring Sammy Ameobi back to The City Ground this summer, despite the winger being released when his contract with the Reds expired this month, The Athletic reports

Ameobi first signed for the Reds back in 2019, after previously being on the books with the likes of Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers earlier in his career.

He went on to make 81 appearances in total for Nottingham Forest, but didn't sign a new deal with Chris Hughton's side to extend his stay beyond this summer.

The Athletic claim that 'it is still not beyond the realms of possibility that Ameobi could yet be offered fresh terms', although it remains to be seen as to whether a new offer is on the table from Forest at this stage.

It was a frustrating 2020/21 season for Nottingham Forest, as they finished 17th in the Championship, after previously struggling to stay afloat in the second tier, much to the irritation of The City Ground faithful.

The club then went on to announce that a number of senior players would depart this summer upon the expiration of their contracts with Forest, as they looked to rebuild ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, which is set to get under way in August.

For now though, Ameobi is free to talk to other clubs over a potential move ahead of the new season, and he'll be keen to find a new team at the earliest of opportunities.

The Verdict:

This is an interesting one.

I will admit that I was surprised to see the club not extend Ameobi's contract beyond this season, as I still think he's got something to offer this Nottingham Forest team.

His trickery on the ball caused opposition defenders problems, and if they were to lose him to another Championship club, then it's a decision that could come back to haunt Nottingham Forest.

I'd expect Ameobi to already have offers from other clubs on the table, and Forest might have already blown their chance to agree a new contract with him at The City Ground.
