Nottingham Forest are close to signing Sheffield Wednesday striker Stevie May, according to the Nottingham Post.

Forest are keen to sign Stevie May

The Scotland international only signed for the Owls last summer from Scottish side St. Johnstone, and netted seven goals in 39 appearances in a low scoring year at Hillsbrough.

He now looks to be on the verge of a loan deal to Forest, providing that Wednesday can complete a £6 million deal to sign Watford striker Matej Vydra.

Manager Dougie Freedman has already tried to sign the Hornets frontman on loan this summer, and is keen to introduce more attacking depth at the City Ground.

Matty Fryatt's consistent injury woes, coupled with Britt Assombalonga being out until January, leave Dexter Blackstock and youngster Tyler Walker as their only options up top.

Freedman told the Nottingham Post: "I believe I am close to getting one player done. And I am on the hunt for a second player as well.

"The first one I am more confident about. The second will be 50/50. It will depend on his club's efforts to bring another player in. To quote their manager, he has said that if he can get his player in, we can have the one we want.

"The player he is after, funnily enough, is a player we tried to get on loan. We were close to getting him as well. But now that player is on the verge of being sold for a lot of money.

"I hope that gets done, because then we can get the target we are after."

May is a decent Championship striker and with little options up front, Freedman will hope to squeeze the best out of him.
