Nottingham Forest close to finalising deal for player from relegation strugglers

Nottingham Forest are set to make a deadline day signing with Jack Colback poised to join from Newcastle United.

The 28-year old midfielder has been frozen out at St. James’ Park and doesn’t train with the first-team after a row with Rafa Benitez in the summer.

Whilst proposed moves fell through late on in August, it appears he will now finally get the chance to play regularly again with a move to Forest expected to go through according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Colback played a fairly significant role for the north east side last season, featuring 29 times as they won promotion from the Championship.

He arrived at Newcastle after controversially leaving arch rivals Sunderland on a free and it has been reported that he is picking up a significant salary whilst at Newcastle which put clubs off in the past.

How the deal is structured remains to be seen but it will represent a positive move from Aitor Karanka who has been desperate to strengthen his midfield.

Forest had been heavily linked with a move for Middlesbrough’s Adam Clayton but that looks highly unlikely now.

The Verdict

Jack Colback is a good player for this level so Forest supporters should be pleased with the move, he will certainly add a lot to the midfield.

The major worry is that he hasn’t done a thing for the best part of six months and may take a while to get back to the full intensity and match fitness that is required.

However, if Karanka can get the Colback of a few seasons ago then he will be a shrewd signing.
