Freedman says fans will be excited about the club's new addition

The Reds boss refused to reveal the name or the position of the player, even though it is thought to be a striker - a position that the team needs to strengthen.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post, Freedman said he understood fans’ wish to see new players arriving at the club, adding that the deal will be an exciting addition.

"I understand the fans are enthusiastic, that they want to see players coming in. I get that. I cannot rush. I cannot spend money, I have to wait for things to fall my way.

"I am patiently waiting – and I have got very close to signing somebody who will really excite the fans.

"Is it a Premier League player? No comment. I am not going to say anything at all to put it at risk, because if we get this player, it will be a real coup. I would love to tell you, but I cannot risk it. It is one of those situations where, if people realise he is available, we would have 20 other clubs trying to get him".

Freedman’s avalanche of hints is likely to spark more speculation about the identity of the new signing, especially after revealing that he plays for a manager who was helped out by Freedman, when his team was in a similar situation, indicating that the transfer could even take place before Friday.

Under FFP rules, the Reds are allowed to have 24 established professionals in their squad, which means they can still sign two new players following the departure of Djamel Abdoun and Radi Majewski.

Forest have completed preparations for the new season with a 3-3 draw against Premier League outfit Aston Villa, their 2015/2016 Sky Bet Championship campaign kicks off against Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday.
