Speaking to the Nottingham Post, Mark Warburton has been unable to provide an update on Adam Federici’s injury, but has insisted he still hopes to see the goalkeeper in a Nottingham Forest shirt.

Forest moved to sign the goalkeeper on a short-term loan deal from AFC Bournemouth on transfer deadline day, with Federici arriving at the City Ground until January.

However, the 32-year-old returned to England early from international duty with injury, and has not yet linked up with Forest, staying in Bournemouth for assessment on his injury.

Warburton was unable to provide an update on Federici’s situation, but stated that he hoped to see the goalkeeper play for Forest, he said: “I don’t know if it is a bad one. I don’t know. I hope it is a short-term injury.

“I still hope we will see him in a Forest shirt. That is the plan. The most important thing is the player’s welfare.”

With Federici ruled out of action this weekend, Warburton is likely to keep faith with Jordan Smith, who has so far featured in all five of Forest’s Sky Bet Championship fixtures.

Smith has helped Forest to nine points from their opening five fixtures, but has managed to keep just one clean sheet.

Warburton’s side will be looking to bounce back from the defeat to Leeds United that Forest suffered in their last league outing, when they travel to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

The Verdict

Federici’s injury is frustrating for Forest and the club’s supporters, as a goalkeeper was high on the agenda towards the end of the summer transfer window.

However, Warburton must now put his faith in Smith, who has enjoyed a decent start to the season as Forest’s number one.

The young goalkeeper is sure to grow into his role the more appearances he makes, and Warburton will be confident he will not let anybody down in Federici’s absence.
