Nottingham Forest and Swansea in transfer tussle in race to land Premier League forward

Sky Bet Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Swansea City are interested in signing Southampton forward Sam Gallagher on loan this month, according to reports from reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The 23-year old has fallen out of favour under Ralph Hasenhuttl and has been limited to just three substitute appearances for the Saints this season, with only one of those coming in the Premier League.

The forward has endured several loan spells away from the St. Mary’s Stadium in his career – scoring seven goals in 34 appearances for Birmingham City last term, as well as netting 12 times in 47 games the season before that for Blackburn Rovers.

The 6-foot-4 striker is set to complete a move away from the South Coast with the transfer window closing in a matter of days, with promotion chasers Nottingham Forest and Swansea City making loan requests.

Swansea are in search for another player up front – Oli McBurnie has led the line well this season with 15 goals to his name, but their next highest goalscorer after that is winger Bersant Celina, with just five goals.

Forest have a plethora of attacking options in their squad, but new manager Martin O’Neill is looking to revamp his squad before the window slams shut on Thursday evening.

The Verdict

For Swansea, this move definitely makes sense – Gallagher has scored goals at this level before, and he’d give them a much needed boost up top.

From a Forest angle, though, why do they need him? They already have the likes of Lewis Grabban and Daryl Murphy who are first-team regulars, and the likes of Karim Ansarifard and Hilal Soudani aren’t getting a look-in at all.

I think Forest should steer well clear of this one, in my opinion.
