Championship duo Nottingham Forest and Hull City are among a number of clubs taking an interest in striker Hervin Ongenda, Foot Mercato have reported.

A former French youth international who came through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, Ongenda currently plies his trade in the Romanian top flight with Botosani, scoring four goals - including one in this weekend's Romanian season opener - and providing five assists in 38 appearances since joining from Spanish side Murcia last summer.

As well as the Championship pair, it is thought that Italian sides Brescia and Chievo Verona, along with Belgian outfit Gent and a number of unnamed Turkish and Gulf teams are also interested in the attacker's signature.

Ongenda's contract with Botosanu is set to expire next summer, and the report claims that that situation could make the striker more affordable, while also suggesting that things could move quickly with regards to a potential transfer in the coming days.

The Verdict

I'm not all that sure about this potential transfer for either Forest or Hull.

The Tigers have already made moves to strengthen their attack in the summer transfer window with the arrival of Tom Eaves from Gillingham, and while it seems Forest are looking to move some of their attacking options, Ongenda doesn't seem to be the most convincing replacement.

He may have been recruited by PSG initially, but the striker didn't enjoy many first-team opportunities with the French giants at all, and his record both with PSG and since he has moved elsewhere hasn't exactly been convincing, suggesting he could struggle to get the goals necessary for either of these two sides.

Although he may be available on the cheap, you feel this would still go down as a somewhat underwhelming signing for either Forest or Hull should they bring him to the Championship.
