Southampton's Harrison Reed could be back in the Championship next season with NottinghamshireLive reporting that The City ground is a likely destination.

Reed made a great impression last year at Blackburn, scoring three goals and providing seven assists as Rovers finished 15th.

The 24-year-old was touted as a player with a lot of potential in his younger days at The Saints, but he has barely featured for the team, and instead gone out on loan - he was at Norwich in the 2017/18 season.

Jack Colback has returned to Newcastle after his loan ended and Harrison could be a potential replacement, although Forest are not short of midfield options.

Adlene Guedioura, Ben Watson, Claudio Yacob, Ben Osborn, Liam Bridcutt and Ryan Yates make up the options for Martin O'Neill, but some have been out of favour under the new boss and they could depart this summer.

Furthermore, Reed is more creative and has a better eye for goal than any of the aforementioned players, so could quickly cement his place in the first team.

Our writers have their say on whether Reed would start for Forest next season.

Toby Wilding

"I think he would.

"Reed has been a regular feature during his loans at both Norwich and Blackburn, and you feel there would have to be a guarantee of similar opportunities at Forest if he is to make the move to The City Ground, particularly given the reported Premier League interest in him.

"The versatility and ability he has shown playing in a number of positions at Blackburn last season will help his cause in that sense, as he would be able to step in in a variety of areas around the pitch should injuries and suspensions force the need for that at Forest next season."

Jacob Potter

"Not immediately, but eventually.

"Reed is good enough for the Championship, but Nottingham Forest already have strong options in midfield heading into next season.

"I think The Reds could benefit from having a player of his quality in their squad, and his work ethic would eventually see him force himself into the starting XI."

Louie Chandler

"I don't see why not.

"He has proven he can cut it in the Championship with Rovers and there are certainly places up for grabs in the Reds midfield.

"It may come down to who impresses O'Neill more in pre-season and how he plans on setting his side up."
