There was major disappointment at Leeds United last weekend following a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side losing control of the race for automatic promotion.

Leeds dominated large parts of the game but were picked off by Chris Basham, who scored the game’s only goal. Now, the Blades have control of the race for automatic promotion.

Nevertheless, Leeds are edging closer to confirming their place in the play-offs at the very least. The Whites haven’t competed in the end of season lottery since 2006, whilst the last time they came close was during the 2016/17 campaign under Garry Monk.

In our latest FLW Rewind, we take a look back to that season, when the play-offs looked ‘nailed’ on during March’s international break – coincidently, the point of the season we are currently at.

Monk’s side had just beaten Brighton and Hove Albion – who would eventually win automatic promotion – at Elland Road, with Chris Wood’s brace securing a massive, massive three points.

That set Leeds well clear of seventh, but what followed in the final eight games of the season was a disaster, with Leeds winning just once and narrowly missing out on play-off football.

It made one man look very foolish, with Phil Hay at the Yorkshire Evening Post claiming that the play-offs were ‘nailed’ following the 2-0 win over Brighton on March 18, 2017.

Of course, for a side that’d been so consistent all season to win only once in eight games was a turn up, but the moment Hay made the claim it had some fans worried.

Here at FLW, we take a look back to some reaction from that day…
