Stoke City are considering giving Glenn Whelan the chance to return to the bet365 Stadium following his release from Aston Villa at the end of the season, according to The Sentinel.

Whelan made a total of 338 appearances for Stoke during a nine-year spell at the club, before leaving for Aston Villa in the summer of 2017.

The midfielder has gone onto make 73 appearances in two years at Villa Park, but he will not be offered a new contract at the club following their promotion to the Premier League at the end of this season.

It is thought that Whelan would be keen to make a return to Stoke, although it is also believed that there will be interest in the midfielder from elsewhere in the Championship over the course of the summer transfer window.

So would bringing Whelan back to the club be a good move for Stoke?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their thoughts.

George Brooks

"This would be a very good signing for Stoke.

"Whelan is an extremely experienced player, who already knows the club well and should be able to make an instant impact.

"He was an important player for Stoke over the years and is already a fans' favourite at the club, so perhaps a move there would be the best option for him."

Toby Wilding

"This could be a good move for Stoke.

"Despite being 35-years-old, Whelan still played a significant part in Aston Villa’s promotion campaign this season, so he could still make a contribution as Stoke aim for the same result at the end of next season.

"His knowledge of the club and experience in the game could also make him an important asset both on and off the pitch."

Kealan Hughes

"He's not what Stoke need right now.

"He would add experience to the squad after the departures of Darren Fletcher and Charlie Adam, but Nathan Jones should be looking for young, hungry players with a point to prove.

"The positive for Stoke is that he knows the club well and wouldn't cost a fee, but they were right to let him move on when they did and since he is a player on the decline they shouldn't go back in for him."
