It has previously been reported by The Sun on Sunday that McLaughlin was a long-term transfer target for Tony Mowbray’s side, as the Lancashire-based side look to strengthen their squad ahead of next year’s campaign.
McLaughlin has made 35 appearances in total for Sunderland this season, and has played his part in their promotion bid this term, with the Black Cats currently sat seventh in the third tier standings.

But the shot-stopper is out-of-contract at the end of this year’s campaign, and it seems likely that he’ll be heading for the exit door in the near future.
Blackburn currently have Christian Walton between the posts this term, but he’ll return to Brighton and Hove Albion from his loan spell with Tony Mowbray’s men.
Plenty of Sunderland fans took to social media to issue their thoughts on McLaughlin’s rumoured departure from the Stadium of Light.

Not surprising. Tends to let contracts end and not even certain he was ever offered an extension which is a shame. Was a good GK for this league. Move forward with burge & lock down Maguire & o'nien.

Agree the only real disappointment is if we didnt offer him a new deal or do more to keep him. Think he was always looking for that last big pay day. Maguire is must hopefully O'Nien is already tied down for next season as he has a automatic extension in his deal

I mean you can’t begrudge him moving to a bigger league but FFS. Why do we always lose the battle to keep players?

The fact that they haven’t even offered him a deal shows how interested they were in keeping him.
The owner rated him at £5mill last summer too 🤷🏼♂️ #SAFC

McLaughlin has made this sort of move regularly throughout his career. It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, nor is there anything wrong with it.

He s always said he wanted to stay he just hasn’t been offered a new deal, Alnwick s probably going to replace him on 900 a week
