Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer was a clear transfer target for Watford back in the summer.

There were plenty of reports linking the 20-year-old with a move to Vicarage Road this summer, but, in the end, Archer remained at Villa Park.

Game time has been hard to come by for the youngster, though, featuring for just 51 minutes of action this season so far.

As such, the youngster is now hoping to leave the club in January on loan, as per BirminghamLive.

With the above in mind, and Archer seeking a temporary January switch, we asked three of our FLW writers if Watford should reignite their interest in the player.

I'm not so sure about this one now, to be honest.

In the summer I was a big fan of the move, but, with Keinan Davis now leading the line at Vicarage Road, you do question if this would be the right move for either party.

Don't get me wrong, Archer is absolutely fantastic and would be a brilliant asset for Watford to have, he may even get into the side ahead of Keinan Davis, but, given Davis is on loan from Villa, and Watford only play one up front, there is always going to be someone missing out.

Given both players play for Villa, sanctioning this move would harm one of their loan players development, so I just can't see it happening.

I think somewhere Archer will be absolutely guaranteed starting minutes would be a better shout for him personally.

I am a really big fan of Cameron Archer and I think he has an excellent career ahead of him but I do not see Watford being the best fit for him.

Archer has proven to thrive alongside a powerful strike partner, and with Slaven Bilic seemingly fixed on a 4-2-3-1 formation, or a slight variation of that, I do not see that being the next next move for Archer.

Whilst there would be potential for Keinan Davis and Archer to flourish alongside each other, it just does not seem likely when considering how Bilic has operated thus far as Watford boss.

I do think that Watford is a good destination for young players to go out and develop, but with my formational concerns, and the fact that it would be difficult for Archer to see regular game time with Davis in the side, it would not be the best decision for Aston Villa to make.

When you consider that Watford are already able to turn to Joao Pedro and Keinan Davis for inspiration, they may not need to add to their attacking options in January.

Whereas Archer did manage to score seven goals in an impressive loan spell at Deepdale last season, he may not necessarily be an upgrade on the aforementioned duo.

In order for the forward to improve significantly as a player, he will need to join a team who are willing to play him week-in, week-out in January.

Watford will not be able to guarantee him game-time and thus a move will not suit either of the two parties involved.
