Sunderland are in desperate need of reinforcements during the January transfer window, with Chris Coleman’s side struggling towards the foot of the table.

It will take a sterling effort by the former Wales manager to keep his side in the division this season, and the winter window could throw Coleman an opportune lifeline.

Funds are expected to be extremely limited, with the club possessing a virtually nil transfer budget, so Coleman will have to work efficiently and effectively, procuring players through loan moves and free agency as he attempts to build a side capable of survival.

A striker will be high on Coleman’s wishlist, with top scorer Lewis Grabban potentially on his way out should parent club Bournemouth receive a permanent offer for the player, and new faces are needed in case of this eventuality.

With no funds to speak of as it stands, Coleman should target these two young Premier League stars…

Harry Wilson

Although Wilson is classed by many as a winger, the 20-year-old has proven himself efficient in front of goal this semester with Liverpool’s reserves.

Nine goals already, the player is proving what a top talent he is, and Coleman could look to make a January loan move for the player he handed a Wales debut to back in 2013.

Wilson was just sixteen-years-old when the honour was thrust upon him, and it could come down to his former international boss to accelerate his career once again.

With the first-team a long way off at Liverpool, Wilson should consider joining Coleman’s relegation battle, where the winger-cum-striker could prove to be a key cog in the Black Cats’ push for survival.

Lukas Nmecha

The 18-year-old England youth international has eight goals for Manchester City’s U-23 side this season, and is touted as one of the most exciting young talents at the club.

The forward is extremely pacy and has a keen eye for goal, with these traits something Coleman is keen to add to his squad in the new year.

Nmecha is a long way from breaking into the first-team on a regular basis at The Etihad, and manager Pep Guardiola will know that a loan move could work wonders for the player.

The Spaniard will place faith in Coleman’s ability to nurture the youngster, having seen the Welshman work so carefully with youth during his spell as Wales boss, so this transfer could happen in the new year.

Nmecha could make a big difference to Sunderland’s survival chances.
