After the sale of John Egan this summer to Sheffield United, Brentford could have been excused for being slightly concerned about their centre-back situation.

But youth graduate Chris Mepham has helped to wipe-out those concerns completely with some outstanding displays in the Bees' defence.

Alongside Ezri Konsa, the 20-year-old has made Egan nothing more than a distant memory, playing a key role in Dean Smith's side's impressive start to the season.

The Bees currently sit fifth in the Championship table with 11 points from a possible 18 having impressed onlookers with their attacking style of play.

Football League World put a poll to Brentford fans with a simple question: Is Chris Mepham worth over £10million?

The results were rather surprising with nearly 70% of fans saying their young centre-back is not worth that amount.

There is no doubt that in today's inflated market the Bees could get a lot for the Welshman, but the Griffin Park faithful are clearly a realistic bunch.

But are they correct in their valuation? We discuss...

It is interesting the majority of the Brentford fans polled didn’t think their own player was worth £10million.

Clubs usually over-inflate the value of their own player. But I agree with them.

He’s only 20 and has played less than 40 games; you can’t tell me that constitutes him worth that sort of money.

These days you pay for potential, but potential is an unknown quantity as you have no idea If it will ever be fulfilled.

Gary Hutchinson

It’s nice to see fans with an honest appraisal of their own player.

Mepham is a good player, he’s performing well for the Bees right now, but £10m?

Not a chance.

At least the fans agree and don’t see the world through rose-tinted spectacles.

Sam Rourke

You've got to agree, Mepham is not worth over £10m right now.

There is no doubting he's a talented centre-back with bags of potential, but i'd put him in the bracket of a £7m-8m defender right now.

He's very mature for his age and looks set for a bright future.

Alfie Burns

I would be shocked if Brentford received that type of fee for him now, but he’s well on the way to that kind of value.

Mepham has been excellent for Brentford, with his performances contributing to the club’s good start.

I’d say he was worth somewhere around the £5m mark, but if he carries this on it could well double.

George Dagless

It's probably close to that but not over.

He's a good player but £10m is still a lot of money even in this modern market.

I think if we were to value him we'd be looking at about £6m-£8m instead perhaps.

Chris Gallagher

I'm with the majority - he's not worth over £10m.

Fair play to the Bees for holding out for a big fee for their player as they have every right to, but £10m is more than fair for the Welsh youngster.

Obviously, he's cleary a very talented player and has great potential but I don't think he's shown enough yet to warrant a figure more than that yet.
