Norwich City were once labelled as a team too good for the Championship and too bad for the Premier League.

Their failure to adapt between divisions has meant that the side have endured four relegations and enjoyed five promotions in their last 16 seasons.

There is one quite resounding reason why Norwich consistently rise and fall through the ranks and it is their overwhelming and quite naïve trust in the strikers that got them promoted in the first place.

Evidence of this can first be seen in their initial promotion from League One to the Championship. The side finished top of England’s third tear with special thanks to the 30 goals Grant Holt got for his side that season.

Norwich then showed this same trust in Holt who proved to be the club’s top scorer again that season and helped them earn back-to-back promotions with 23 goals.

Now Norwich were in the Premier League they still decided to stick with Holt who, granted got them 15 goals in their first season back in the Prem. However, even after that season, Norwich still decided to stick with the striker the following season who manged just eight goals in the entire campaign. The following season, Norwich were relegated.

No matter though, as they had a new striker in the form of Cameron Jerome to power them back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The forward scored 21 goals for his side as they won the play-offs to play Premier League football once again. Did Norwich learn their lesson?

No. They again showed their complete trust in the Jerome and handed him the number 10 shirt for their return to the Premier League. In 34 Premier League matches, the striker managed three goals and Norwich were relegated once again.

History repeats itself over and over again and Norwich have to be careful to avoid this same fate once again.

Teemu Pukki performed wonders in the Championship this season and was the league’s top scorer with 30 goals, but Norwich would still be playing a dangerous game to then hand their total faith in the man who has never played in England’s top-flight.

A proven Premier League striker to guarantee a recently promoted team goals is a proven method that Norwich may need to abide by. Just look at how well Brighton have done in loaning and then signing Glenn Murray whose goals have helped them retain their Premier League status for another season.
