After a great season, Norwich City are preparing for life in the Premier League, and one player they could and should try to sign is Arsenal’s defensive midfielder Krystian Bielik, currently thriving on loan at Charlton Athletic.
Bielik was linked to the Canaries back in the January transfer window of 2017/18, but no deal was struck, with the Polish U-21 international joining Walsall on loan instead.
That move may have been the wrong decision, with Bielek rejecting the chance to play for Daniel Farke’s men who went on to promotion the season after.
Since then though, the move to Charlton has worked well. With Lee Bowyer in charge, Bielik has been a trusted regular at The Valley.
It was him who netted the first goal of the night on Friday against Doncaster, in an enthralling game that saw the hosts qualify for the final via penalties.
In truth, they shouldn’t have needed penalties, with defensive vulnerabilities showing in the 90 minutes where they really should have put the game to bed.
Alongside the likes of Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo though, Bielik has been a star for Bowyer’s men, making 31 League One appearances.
That goal was the fourth of his season in Charlton colours – a defensive player that is prolific from set pieces will please Farke and Norwich – the potential suitor – especially knowing their side will most likely have to capitalise from set plays next season as they will not dominate possession like they did this season.
Whether Bielik is ready for the Premier League or not is unsure – his defensive abilities are raw and have room for improvement, but if he wins Charlton promotion, there is no reason why he shouldn’t aim high with his next move.
At just 21, Bielik is showing maturity beyond his years, shielding the defence of Patrick Bauer and Naby Sarr. Bielik can play either here or in the back four as a central defender.
Norwich will be in need of defensive reinforcements this summer, and a young talent with the general-like enforcer abilities that Bielik possesses seems a wise option.
Whether he was a regular player or more of a squad player, Bielik seems a good choice for Norwich and one that fits the mould of Daniel Farke, so it will be interesting to see whether they go back in for the Polish man or not.
