Norwich City look on course to bounce straight back up to the Premier League and do it in style.

There has not been a relegation hangover for the Canaries, who are eight points clear at the top of the Championship heading into the international break.

Returning to the Premier League will likely mean another busy summer in the transfers market – both in terms of bringing in new signings and dealing with the interest in some of their stars.

Norwich didn't overspend last time they went up and you feel that's helped them to deal with the relegation this season but it's going to be interesting to see how they approach the summer window, particularly if they cash in on the likes of Emi Buendia.

With that in mind, we've turned our focus back to their big-money signings of the past.

We've compiled a list of Norwich City's top 10 most expensive signings and examined what they are up to now...

Norwich broke their transfer record to sign Dean Ashton from Crewe for £3 million in January 2005, with the striker having fired in goals for the North West club.

His stay at Carrow Road was a brief but effective one. Ashton found the net 18 times in 46 appearances for the Canaries before he was snapped up by West Ham United for £7 million – with the Norfolk side making a fair bit of profit.

He retired in December 2009 after injuries hampered the late part of his career and can now be seen doing punditry, mostly on the EFL and West Ham.

Norwich's move for Nelson Oliveira came after he had impressed in a number of loan moves away from Benfica.

The Canaries signed him for £4.4 million in August 2016 and he would find the net 20 times in 70 appearances before his exit three years later.

Oliveira left Carrow Road to join Greek side AEK Athens in 2019 and has been pretty impressive for his new side, scoring 26 times and adding 10 assists in his 65 appearances.

With his contract up this summer, the 29-year-old could be on the move once again – you'd imagine a return to Norwich is very unlikely.

The signing of Gary Hooper looked a very shrewd bit of business from Norwich when they landed him for around £5 million in July 2013.

The striker had scored a ridiculous 82 goals in 138 games for Celtic but he never quite found that sort of form for the Canaries.

He did contribute to their promotion back to the Premier League in 2014/15 but left the club to join Sheffield Wednesday in January 2016.

His spell with Wednesday ended in 2019 and he's since played for Wellington Pheonix in the A-League and his current club. Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters.

The midfielder has spent a large part of his career in English football but it was Norwich that first brought him to this country, signing him from FC Twente for £5.5 million in 2014.

Leroy Fer impressed in his first season at Carrow Road but left in the following summer to join QPR.

Swansea City were the Dutchman's next English club before he returned to boyhood club Feyenoord ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

The 31-year-old has been a regular fixture for the Eredivisie outfit this term, featuring 21 times, helping his side to fifth in the table as things stand.

The Dutch winger ultimately proved a disappointing signing for the Canaries after they signed him for £7 million late in the 2017 January window.

Yanic Wildschut had been a dominant player for Wigan before they sold him to Norwich but never found that sort of form at Carrow Road.

He spent most of the time on their books out on loan and left the club permanently to join Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in July 2019.

Wildschut remains at that club to this day but after impressing in his first season there has struggled somewhat this term.

Robbie Brady was one of the signings Norwich made in the summer after they were promoted to the Premier League in 2014/15.

The versatile wide player joined from Hull City for £7 million and would prove a shrewd bit of business.

He impressed enough with the Canaries that they nearly doubled their money when they sold him to Burnley late in the 2017 January window.

Brady remains at Turf Moor to this day but has seen much of his time there hampered by injuries.

Though he has remained a regular figure in the Republic of Ireland squad and will likely feature for them during the international break.

The Canaries looked to have made a strong move by snapping up Alex Pritchard from Tottenham for £8 million back in 2016, with the playmaker having impressed out on loan.

His time at Carrow Road was up and down but he departed in January 2018 to join Huddersfield Town.

Pritchard looks like a player that needs a fresh start and may well get one this summer as his contract with Huddersfield expires at the end of the season.

QPR and Bristol City have both been linked with the 27-year-old, so he may well remain in the Championship.

Norwich splashed out on striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel ahead of the 2013/14 Premier League season – spending £8.5 million to prize him away from Benfica.

It's fair to say the move didn't work out and he never found his feet at the Norfolk club, scoring just two goals for them in his 28 appearances.

The Dutchman left permanently to return to the Netherlands in 2016 but now plays for Swiss side FC Basel.

The 32-year-old has fared a lot better in Switzerland but has struggled to find the net this term and is currently sidelined due to injury.

It's no surprise to see another striker high up on this list, particularly one that they bought from a rival Premier League club in the 2016 January transfer window.

Norwich paid £8.5 million to sign Naismith from Everton but his arrival didn't have the desired effect as they were relegated in 2015/16 and he scored just once.

He was improved the next season in the Championship but still didn't pull up any trees and left to join Hearts in the summer of 2017.

Naismith remains at the Scottish club to this day, has rediscovered his goalscoring form and is their captain.

Another January signing, Norwich paid Wolfsburg €11 million (£9.49 million) to sign Timm Klose in the middle of the 2015/16 campaign.

The Swiss defender could keep them in the Premier League that season but was a mainstay in their side over the next few seasons and helped them return to the top flight for the 2019/20 campaign.

Klose returned to Switzerland on a season-long loan in October to join Basel, one of the clubs that he'd been at as a youth player.

It is understood the Swiss side have the option to buy the 32-year-old permanently but should they not trigger that he will return to Carrow Road in the summer, with one year left on his deal.
