Norwich City defender Christoph Zimmerman could be on his way out of the club this summer.

That's according to reports in his homeland, with outlet BILD, via Eastern Daily Press, claiming that the centre-back is close to joining Bundesliga 2 side SV Darmstadt.

Zimmerman's exit perhaps comes as no surprise given that he made just three Premier League appearances last season, and struggled with injury.

He was reportedly made available for transfer back in January, but sufficient interest failed to materialise, meaning he remained on the club's books into the summer.

A return to the Championship likely would not have seen Zimmerman get much of a look in either, with the German defender making just 22 appearances in the second-tier as the club won promotion from the division in 2021/22.

The German did, however, feature heavily in Norwich's promotion to the Premier League prior to that.

In 2018/19, for example, he made 40 Championship appearances. The season prior, he had also featured in 39 league matches.

All in all, the 29-year-old has racked up 139 appearances for the Canaries during his time at Carrow Road.

The Verdict

This is probably the right move for Norwich City and the player.

Although he did well enough for the club previously in the second tier, after not playing too much for the club in the last two seasons, and struggling with injuries, a fresh start was needed.

This move would, though, leave the Canaries looking quite light at the centre of their defence.

Ben Gibson, Grant Hanley and Andrew Omobamidele are all good options at Championship level, but the club will need further reinforcements in this are should Zimmerman depart.
