Cody McDonald went on to have a successful career in League One and Two after leaving Norwich City in 2011.

The 35-year-old striker has been without a club since January 2020 when he was let go Ebbsfleet United but nonetheless McDonald has plenty to be proud of from his Football League career.

McDonald joined Coventry City in August 2011 after impressing on loan at Gillingham the previous season. It did not work out for the intelligent striker with the Sky Blues and he was loaned to Priestfield Stadium once again before eventually joining on a permanent basis in the summer of 2013.

The best period of his career was in Gills colours and he ended his time at the club with numbers of 81 goals in 222 appearances, scoring a memorable 25 of those finishes on loan in League Two in 2010/11.

McDonald then joined AFC Wimbledon and stayed for just one year in the summer of 2017, he contributed seven goals that season but overall struggled to replicate his form in a Gillingham shirt somewhere else once again.

He was released the following summer before dropping into non-league with Ebbsfleet United. Seemingly at the end of his career, with no formal retirement announced,

McDonald can look back on great times for Gillingham and some respectable goalscoring records after leaving Norwich City uncertain if he could sustain a career in the professional game.

93 goals in over 300 appearances in the three tiers paints the picture of a thoroughly entertaining and reliable operator steeped in history at Gillingham.
