Norwich City are fielding EFL interest in Todd Cantwell as the likelihood of a January move starts to heighten.
Cantwell, 23, has failed to register a goal or an assist this season in the Premier League, despite the playmaker having a crucial role in promotion from the Championship last season with six goals.
The Athletic note how there are unnamed EFL sides interested in doing a deal for Cantwell during the January transfer window, on loan with an obligation to buy him if said club wins promotion.
The suggestion, then, is that the clubs interested are competing for promotion to the Premier League.
Have Norwich City had a higher or lower average attendance compared to these 23 sides this season?
Despite no goals or assists in eight Premier League appearances this season and falling out of favour under Dean Smith, Cantwell has previously thrived in the Championship.
During the 2020/21 campaign, as Norwich stormed to promotion and another Premier League title, Cantwell struck six goals and chalked up six assists.
There are other clubs interested in Cantwell, though, with The Athletic outlining how Newcastle United are keen on the playmaker.
However, Norwich’s valuation of £15m would have to fall dramatically for that deal to happen, The Athletic claim.
This is an interesting link and, you feel, the longer the January transfer window goes on, there is heightened opportunity for Cantwell to move back into the EFL.
He’d be a great signing for someone like AFC Bournemouth, offering something different to Philip Billing behind the forward line. You could see him thriving under Scott Parker, too.
That’s us speculating, though, as it isn’t clear which of these top-end Championship clubs are interested in signing the 23-year-old.
It’s one to keep an eye on as the transfer window goes on.
